Cultivating Regenerative Learning Ecologies:
Is your school ready to deepen your learning through transformative outdoor nature based education, advance your DPS Climate Action Plan or expand your toolkit to access immersion in outdoor learning in all seasons?
WHAT: Here is one example of an elementary school we work with in SE Denver - Joe Shoemaker Elementary. From their website:
"To help us make the most of our space, we've partnered with the Mycelium Cooperative to bring the magic of the outdoors directly into our curriculum. When students step outside, their brains naturally shift into a “play mindset,” while it feels like fun, this shift is actually also a powerful tool for education. Research shows that outdoor nature-based learning does more than just provide fresh air; it helps:
-
Boost academic success: Students stay engaged and retain information when they are active.
-
Increase equity: Nature provides a playing field where every child can find a way to shine.
-
Builds confidence: Students learn to navigate the world safely and sustainably.
Our staff works closely with their organization to develop methods to teach traditional curriculum in our outdoor spaces. By integrating nature into daily lessons, we are helping our students become “ecological citizens” who understand and care for their environment."
WHY: Here is a compilation of research for why and how Outdoor Nature Based Pedagogy can enhance learning and increase equity.
HOW: Mycelium Cooperative partners with K-12 schools to cultivate Regenerative Learning Ecologies—educational approaches that integrate outdoor nature-based pedagogy with academic excellence. We support teachers and leadership in developing new systems alongside existing structures, building confidence in outdoor safety and sustainable practices that foster ecological citizenship while meeting academic standards.
Through mentoring, coaching, and collaborative curriculum design, we help schools create learning environments where students and educators develop meaningful relationships with place, deepen their understanding of climate resilience, and practice regenerative thinking in action.
Each partnership is customized to your school’s Climate Action goals, outdoor spaces, community context, and teacher readiness.
Our approach emphasizes:
Both/and thinking: Honoring academic rigor AND ecological connection -
Justice-oriented practice: Centering accessibility, inclusion, and equity -
Community-centered learning: Building relationships with place and people -
Regenerative pedagogy: Moving beyond sustainability to restoration and reciprocity
